New south Columbia roads nearly completed

The $1.7 million project to build State Farm Parkway and extend Southampton Drive is almost complete, and the roads will officially open after a ceremony at 10 a.m. Sept. 6.

The project is funded primarily with $1.5 million from the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Surface Transportation Program. Other funds come from a special road district tax, development charges and a special assessment tax bill.

The roads will not open until after the ribbon-cutting ceremony near the new roundabout on Southampton Drive and State Farm Parkway, east of Providence Road. The Columbia Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, Mayor Darwin Hindman, City Manager Bill Watkins and Mike Staloch, vice president of operations from State Farm Insurance, will be present.

The road runs in front of the new State Farm Insurance building and continues east of Providence Road. Southampton Drive has been extended to cross Providence and connect with the new parkway before it runs back north to Nifong Boulevard.

At the ribbon cutting ceremony, officials will announce the new recycling site for the Solid Waste Program, a drop-off center near the roundabout.
