Armed man robs Drury Inn

COLUMBIA — A man armed with a rifle robbed a local hotel early Thursday morning.

The night clerk at the Drury Inn, 1000 Knipp St., was working in the hotel’s lobby at 5 a.m. when he was confronted by a man holding a weapon, Columbia police Capt. Steve Monticelli said.

According to a police news release, the clerk followed the suspect’s instructions to hand over an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register.

When the suspect ordered the clerk to go into the back office, the clerk closed the door and locked the suspect out of the office.

The suspect left in an unknown direction.

“It is unusual to use a rifle in a robbery like this subject did,” Monticelli said.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 30s with a medium complexion and about 5 feet 10 inches tall.

He was last seen wearing wire-rimmed glasses and a blue hooded sweatshirt.

The Drury Inn lobby was the location of a November 2006 suicide, when a male 30-year-old Moberly resident walked into the hotel and shot himself in the head.
