September 3, 2007 | 8:28 p.m. CST

Chuck Engle of Salt Lake City won the 47th annual Heart of America Marathon on Monday finishing ahead of 146 runners in 2 hours, 42 minutes and 50 seconds. This was the 108th marathon that Engle has finished and the second in two days. He completed the Tupelo Marathon in Tupelo, Miss. on Sunday.

“Winning is always special, no doubt about it,” Engle said. “But anyone who finishes is a winner.”

Tom Whalen of St. Louis finished second in 2:48:43. Columbia runners claimed the next three spots, with Eric Branch finishing third in 2:51:14 and Chris Cook, last year’s winner, in fourth in 2:58:30. Tom May finished fifth in 3:02:04.

The Heart of America Marathon is a Labor Day tradition in Columbia and the fifth oldest marathon in the country.
