PrintCOLUMBIA — The Columbia Peace Coalition will host its annual vigil Tuesday to honor the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The candlelight vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. in front of the Boone County Courthouse, 705 E. Walnut St. The event, “A Peaceful World is Possible,” will also commemorate those who died in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
The anniversary event is meant to encourage forgiveness, unity and awareness.
“A peaceful world is not a world without conflict,” said Gregg Bush, the lead organizer of the event. “The question doesn’t become whether you have conflict, but how do you choose to resolve conflict? You can’t resolve conflict with violence. The only way to resolve conflict is through forgiveness.”
The hour-long vigil will feature talks by psychologists Taleb Khairallah and Laura Schopp, and activist Iman Sandra Labadia. Midwest Chocolate and Poetry-in-Motion will perform music. The event will move to the Commission Chambers at the Boone Government Center if it rains.
Schopp, an anti-war activist, said she wants to raise awareness of the effects of war and affect how the public views foreign policy.
“We’re not there to persuade anyone, but we do offer some information on the toll of the war,” she said. “If we help people see the downstream of effects on our foreign policy I think we can help inspire change.”
