PrintAn assistant chief with the Boone County Fire Protection District has resigned.
Assistant Fire Chief Ken Hines, who has been on leave from the Fire Protection District several times since 2001 while on active duty in Belleville, Ill., and Fairfax, Va., with the U.S. Coast Guard, resigned effective July 16, board members said Thursday.
Board member Dave Griggs said Hines, 52, accepted another offer at a government agency. He declined to name Hines’ new employer.
“I just wanted to personally thank Ken for his service,” Griggs said, noting Hines’ years in the Coast Guard and his community involvement.
Board Chairman John Gordon also noted that Hines, the former head of the fire district’s Life Safety Bureau and a department spokesman, was instrumental in creating the fire district’s bomb squad.
Fire Chief Steve Paulsell said Hines, an expert in port and harbor security, “used the word ‘retirement’ from a career standpoint,” and that Hines would continue volunteering with the fire district.
Hines’ 2006 salary was $95,874.
He could not be reached for comment Thursday night.
