As others see us: Historic Missouri firsts
- In 1876, the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company introduced Budweiser, the first brand of American beer.
- Aunt Jemima pancake flour, invented in St. Joseph and sold to the public in 1889, was the first ready-mix commercial food product ever made.
- The 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis introduced several culinary firsts to the United States: ice cream waffle cones, Dr. Pepper and the first glass of iced tea.
- The first parachute jump from a moving airplane was made by U.S. Army Capt. Albert Berry over St. Louis on March 1, 1912.
- On July 7, 1928, the first loaf of pre-sliced bread was produced in Chillicothe, thanks to a bread-slicing machine invented by Otto Frederick Rohwedder.
- The moment was immortalized in the American lexicon with the expression, “The greatest thing since sliced bread.”
