Teens learn farming safety at MU
Les Green of Huntsville’s Circle A Ranch gives a demonstration in horse and livestock safety at the 6th annual Farm and Safety College held at MU’s Trowbridge Livestock Center on Sept. 18. 235 students grades 7-10 from throughout Missouri attended the day’s events, which were hosted by the Missouri’s Cattlemen Foundation and Mizzou Collegiate CattleWomen for National Farm and Safety Week. Green demonstrated safe horse handling that included advice on saddling, harnessing and the proper way to lead with a rope. Throughout the presentation, he stressed the importance of developing safe habits with horses and livestock.
“It may seem obvious, but I want to impress upon the students that the horse is bigger than they are and that often their attitude is going to affect the horse’s reaction,” he said. Other safety demonstrations included topics in hunting and firearms, electricity, and lawn and garden tools.
