COLUMBIA — MU engineering researchers have developed a non-invasive, advanced drug delivery system using nanotechnology that might improve the treatment of serious illnesses such as cancer.

The device, which is significantly smaller than similar delivery systems, uses the body’s pores as entry points. Researchers believe the process can destroy tumors, kidney stones and ulcers. The technology also has potential to treat HIV.

The nanoparticles pose no hazard to the body, researchers said. The device might need three more years of testing before it will be marketed.

Shubhra Gangopadhyay, an MU electrical and computer engineering professor, created the device with several collaborators.
