MU football player arrested on suspicion of assault

COLUMBIA — A reserve safety on MU’s football team was arrested by MU police Wednesday on suspicion of third-degree assault.

MU police said 19-year-old Gilbert Moye punched his roommate on the chin with a closed fist about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday after an argument on the second floor of South Hall, 404 Kentucky Blvd.

Moye was arrested Wednesday and released on a summons, said MU police Capt. Brian Weimer.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound strong safety from Jasper, Texas, was primarily a quarterback in high school, but came to MU as a safety.

Moye is currently listed as the third team strong safety behind senior starter Pig Brown and backup Justin Garrett. He selected MU over Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Colorado, TCU, Houston and Iowa State, among others.

Athletics department spokesman Chad Moller said Wednesday evening he had no information about Moye’s status with the team.

Moye’s arrest comes just a week after two other reserve defenders were arrested by Columbia police in separate incidents.

John Stull, a redshirt freshman and backup defensive lineman, was arrested on suspicion of assault last week in connection with a fight at Gaucho’s restaurant. Police said Stull punched a 26-year-old man in the mouth Sept. 6 after an argument over money.

Stull, 20, is on two years’ unsupervised probation for a misdemeanor peace disturbance conviction from February.

Steve Redmond, a junior and backup linebacker, was also arrested last week on suspicion of throwing a nuisance party at his Boulder Drive home. Redmond, 21, was arrested along with his roommate, former MU softball player Kendra Power.
