COLUMBIA — MU police are investigating the appearance of racially offensive graffiti in the bathroom of a university classroom building.

An employee of the religious studies department found the graffiti in the second-story men’s bathroom in the Arts and Science Building and alerted police Monday, said MU police Capt. Brian Weimer.

Weimer said the graffiti was written in either a pen, marker or highlighter and that the messages first appeared Aug. 24. The five entries included racist references to blacks and pejorative references about gay men and sex.

Weimer said a call had been put in to a maintenance crew to remove the graffiti.
