COLUMBIA — Members of the UM System Board of Curators met for half an hour Wednesday afternoon via teleconference in a closed session.

Scott Charton, spokesman for the University of Missouri System, said the curators discussed the search for a new general counsel to replace retiring attorney Marvin “Bunky” Wright.

Applications for the position have already been collected and a hiring decision was not expected at the meeting, Charton said.

Charton, who did not attend the meeting, said the curators would not be discussing the system’s search for a new president.

Wright has worked as general counsel for the past nine years. His retirement is effective Dec. 31.

The general counsel represents the Board of Curators, all administrators in the system, University Extension and MU Health Care.

In addition, the general counsel is responsible for representing any university employee who is sued for actions within the scope of their duties for the university.

Wright has held the position since March 1, 1998. He has also served as president of both the Missouri National Bar and the National Association of College and University Attorneys.
