PrintCOLUMBIA — Truman Veterans Hospital and up to 75 residential neighbors lost power Thursday morning when Columbia Water & Light workers were fixing a city power connection at the hospital.
Power has been restored to residents that live nearby. Full power was restored at the hospital at 12:25 p.m.
The outage occurred at about 9 a.m. when city workers were trying to put in a backup feed line for the hospital, said Chad Shettlesworth, an electrical distribution coordinator for the city.
The hospital has an emergency generator system to provide power to operating rooms, intensive care and patient wards when there is a power failure, said Stephen Gaither, a public affairs officer at the hospital.
Outpatient clinics were operating in an “abbreviated format” because most computers were working and windows provide natural light, Gaither said. They are now working at full power during business hours.
Most of the other customers affected by the outage were fraternity and sorority houses on Burnam Avenue, Richmond Avenue, Kentucky Boulevard and Rollins Road. Some customers only lost half of their power, where only half of the electronic outlets and lights in the homes would work.
