PrintCOLUMBIA — A 59-year-old Higbee man was killed Thursday afternoon after his car struck a road barrier and sailed over Brown Station Road near U.S. 63.
The driver, E. Robert Berg, was not wearing a seatbelt, police said Friday morning.
Just after 4 p.m. Thursday, Berg was traveling north in a newer model Monte Carlo when he hit the concrete barrier of the overpass over Brown Station Road. The vehicle flew 180 feet through the air and smashed into the steel guardrail below.
“He seemed to be going at an excessive speed,” Columbia police Sgt. Tim Moriarity said, “and appeared to be passing people, going through the median.”
The force of the impact “basically flipped the vehicle up to the top of the embankment,” Moriarity said Thursday as officers and a Columbia Fire Department crew waited for a wrecker to move the vehicle.
Berg was ejected from the vehicle and had suffered “heavy trauma to the body,” Moriarity said.
An off-duty sheriff’s deputy who was on her way home and still in uniform responded first to the call.
Although there was no fire, Moriarity said a civilian stopped and used a fire extinguisher at the scene.
Alcohol was not known to be involved, Moriarity said.
