COLUMBIA — The Columbia College volleyball team got off to a slow start against Hannibal-LaGrange Monday night but rebounded to sweep the Trojans.

The No. 9 Cougars committed several errors in the first game and struggled to hold on for a 30-21 win, but there was never any doubt about the outcome in the final two games as they cruised to 30-12 and 30-10 victories.

Columbia College coach Melinda Wrye-Washington said a similar effort against one of the NAIA’s top teams would have led to a vastly different result.

“I told the girls that if this was a Hastings, or a Dickinson (State) or a National American, then you’re going to get spanked,” Wrye-Washington said. “You can’t do that.”

Senior Juliana Quadrado led the Cougars (16-6, 10-0) with 14 kills. Columbia College traveled late Monday night to Fulton to play William Woods University on Tuesday.
