COLUMBIA — The State Games of Mid-America will be held in Columbia next summer in tandem with the Show-Me State Games.
The State Games of Mid-America is expected to draw about 8,000 to 10,000 athletes from Missouri and eight other states: Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota. It will be the first year of the event, which is affiliated with the National Congress of State Games.
Those who compete in the Mid-America games can qualify for the State Games of America in Colorado Springs, Colo,, which is held every other year.
The Mid-America games will be held Aug. 1-3. The 24th-annual Show-Me States Games will be held during that weekend and during the last two weekends of July.
The Show-Me State Games, an Olympic-style sports festival open to amateur athletes throughout the state, regularly draws about 27,000 participants throughout the three weekends of competitions. Those who do well enough in the Show-Me games may compete in the Mid-America games.
