COLUMBIA — The Columbia Historic Preservation Commission is gearing up for the release of its 10th annual list of the 10 most notable city properties. Nominations will be accepted through Nov. 5.
The contest began in 1998 as a way for the commission to “make Columbians more aware of historical property in the area,” said Scott Hanson of the Columbia Planning and Development Department. Residential, commercial, public and private properties are eligible to be nominated as long as they are at least 50 years old. The properties must also be located inside the city of Columbia’s corporate limits and have architectural or historical characteristics that contribute to Columbia socially or aesthetically.
MU’s Switzler Hall and Francis Quadrangle, the Boone County Courthouse and the John Stewart residence have all been named to the list in the past 10 years.
The Historic Preservation Commission will evaluate nominations and select 10 properties for the February award ceremony, which is open to the public. Last year’s ceremony was held at the Tiger Hotel.
“People that are history or architectural buffs in the area look forward to the gala in early winter,” Hanson said.
