COLUMBIA — An Internet Safety Night will address the dangers and crimes associated with online activities and provide families with resources for safer Web surfing from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gentry Middle School, 4200 Bethel St.
“With increased news of Internet predators and other online crimes such as cyber-bullying and identity theft, it is vitally important that parents and community members, as well as students, understand the dangers associated with some behaviors,” said Randy Raw, manager of Security Services for MOREnet.
MOREnet — the Missouri Research and Education Network — is hosting the event, which will reach more than 40 sites in seven states. Sites from across the country will be able to connect via interactive videoconferencing to the keynote address and Q-and-A panel. Remote sites will also have the ability to tune in via streaming broadcast and e-mail questions to the panel.
MOREnet hopes to facilitate national discussion on Internet safety issues through the event.
Some of the speakers include Chris Pickering, Chief Investigator in the Missouri Attorney General’s Office; Detective Andy Anderson of the Mid-Missouri Internet Crimes Task Force; and Miss Missouri 2007 Lindsay Casmaer, a victim of cyber-stalking.
