(UPDATE: 11:35 p.m.)
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Boone County at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, which included warnings for deadly lightning and winds in excess of 60 mph.
Strong winds were reported in southwest Columbia and the peak wind gusts were measured at 28 mph, according to weather radar at MU's Sanborn Field.
The National Weather Service said the threat for severe weather across central and eastern Missouri included the possibility of large hail, strong winds and tornadoes.
The Weather Service described the threat as "particularly dangerous" because the severe weather may strike when many people are asleep. "These storms will be moving very fast, so the time to react to a warning may be very short."
Residents were urged to monitor weather developments and be ready to act if a warning is issued.
