PrintThe Hickman football team began district competition with a 32-29 upset victory over No. 4 Fort Zumwalt West on Friday night in O’Fallon.
“Anytime you can go on the road (and win) against a quality program is tremendous,” Hickman coach Jason Wright said. “It was probably the best effort that we’ve had all year.”
The Kewpies bounced back from a sluggish performance last week against Rock Bridge and gained 496 yards of total offense against the Jaguars.
Senior running back Rob Heath led the rushing attack with 256 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns, one of which was a 98-yard run. Senior Tucker Bounds also rushed for 140 yards and one touchdown.
“I thought our offense, for the most part, was pretty much clicking tonight,” Wright said. “We were able to make some plays when it counted offensively.”
At one point, Hickman scored 22 consecutive points to take a 22-7 lead in the second quarter, its biggest lead of the game. Fort Zumwalt West battled back in the fourth quarter and tied at 29, but Hickman senior kicker Stephen Peel made a 31-yard field goal with 3:45 left to win.
“Stephen Peel was the difference in the ballgame,” Wright said. Peel also kicked a 27-yard field goal in the first half.
Fort Zumwalt West threatened to score in the final minute of the game, but on fourth-and-22, Hickman senior Anthony Sims broke up a desperation pass to end the Jaguars’ hopes of victory. Senior cornerback Russell Davis contributed two first-half interceptions for the Kewpies.
