Dress up your doorstep with this easy-to-make spin on the standard carved pumpkin, originally developed in Midwest Living magazine:
Step 1: Buy a large, evenly shaped pumpkin with a long stem and a container of mums.
Step 2: Slice off the top of the pumpkin as you would if you were creating a jack-o-lantern. Scoop out the insides using a big spoon (or your hands, if you’re braver than I am).
Step 3: Grab a drill (you can also carefully use a screwdriver or a hammer and nails) and punch holes where you want to place the flowers — around the stem or cover the entire pumpkin. Space them closely to allow flowers to bunch.
Step 4: Pick out autumn-themed mums (go for reds, oranges and yellows) and stick them in the holes.
Voila! Your creation will last about three days. Your reputation as the new Martha Stewart, however, will last forever.
Tip: Smear Vaseline around the rim between the pumpkin and the lid. This will seal in moisture and prolong the mumkin’s life.
