PrintCOLUMBIA — Columbia police have arrested two men on suspicion of being involved with the robbery of a Jimmy John’s delivery driver and a local car dealership on Friday.
At 11 a.m. Friday, an anonymous caller reported to the Columbia Police Department that two men matching earlier descriptions of the suspects were in Oakland Park, Columbia Police Sgt. Lloyd Simons said. The two men attempted to flee when officers approached them, but were soon arrested.
William Marek, 17, was arrested on suspicion of 1st degree robbery, armed criminal action, 2nd degree burglary and three counts of felony stealing. A 16-year-old man, who’s name has not been released, was also arrested and placed into the custody of the Boone County Juvenile Authorities.
At about 12:11 a.m. Friday, the two suspects flagged down a 20-year-old Jimmy John’s delivery driver in the 300 block of Maplewood Drive and assaulted him with a dumbbell, according to a police department release. The suspects then stole the driver’s sandwiches and fled the scene.
The driver suffered lacerations above his right eye and was taken to the hospital for observation, Columbia Police Captain Brad Nelson said.
Later that morning at 8:20 a.m., Marcy Motors car dealership, 1910 Business Loop 70, reported a burglary had occurred there. Police investigation revealed that three vehicles, along with several sets of vehicle keys, had been stolen from the dealership.
After the arrests, the three vehicles were later found and returned, Simons said.
When questioned by police, Simons said Marek gave information that implicated him and his companion in other crimes in Columbia.
“It is easy to say they were involved in several burglaries along with the robbery,” he said.
Other possible crimes committed by Marek and the 16-year-old are still being investigated by the police department, Simons said. The release said further charges for both are expected in the near future.
