PrintCOLUMBIA — The Fall World Series for the baseball team came to an end Tuesday night with a 1-0 win for the Gold team and a 3-1 series defeat of the Black team. While players were separated into the two different squads for the annual series, they saw the end of a long season of baseball together.
“This is really the end of our season. We’ve been practicing since January,” coach Tim Jamieson said. “They’ve been playing in the summer and the fall.”
What officially began with a three-game series in February against Florida International in Miami. finished with a ground out on a chilly, fall afternoon at Taylor Stadium. According to Jamieson, the players will now take a week off from baseball before focusing on individual and strength and conditioning workouts.
Perhaps in a sign of the transition of sports and seasons, play was briefly suspended in the 7th inning as footballs began emanating from the football practice field. Before long, a student manager was stationed in left field, responsible for catching and returning the footballs to the practice field while play continued.
“We actually had that happen to us in a game against Texas in the spring a few years ago,” Jamieson said. “We’re all neighbors. I’m sure soccer and track get tired of balls coming down on them.”
Whistles and the occasional air horn blare from football practice also persisted throughout the game — at one time coinciding exactly as junior Rick Zagone delivered a pitch in the bottom of the 9th inning.
