PrintCOLUMBIA — In an effort to promote healthy teeth — and help out a local cause at the same time — Columbia’s Robinson Orthodontics will be buying its patients Halloween candy on Nov. 1. The going rate is $1 per pound.
“Every year, we’re inundated with patients with broken braces,” said Laura Edwards, a receptionist at the office. “As an encouragement not to eat those bad things, we buy our patients’ candy.”
For the second straight year, orthodontist Scott Robinson will be donating the candy to the Central Missouri Food Bank; last year, Robinson supplied the food bank with 150 pounds of candy.
In previous years, Robinson donated candy to soldiers in Iraq and victims of Hurricane Katrina.
All is not lost for kids with braces surrendering their hard and crunchy Halloween candy, Edwards says.
“I always tell kids they can still have chocolate,” she said.
Members of the public who wish to donate Halloween candy or any other nonperishable food can do so directly at the Central Missouri Food Bank, 2101 Vandiver Drive.
