PrintCOLUMBIA — The Class 6 No. 5 Hickman football team defeated Fort Zumwalt South 45-7 Friday night at Hickman Field during Hickman's homecoming weekend. The win improved the Kewpies to 7-2.
The Kewpies racked up 35 points in the second quarter to put the game away early on, mostly through the passing game with senior quarterback Doug Luetjen.
Luetjen completed seven of eight passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns, both coming in Hickman’s explosive second quarter. The Kewpies offense has been working on utilizing the passing game more often this week, which would put less pressure on their running backs during district play.
“As you’re going down through districts, you’re hoping that you’re getting better fundamentally and trying to improve in some target areas,” Hickman coach Jason Wright said. “Obviously, passing was a target area for us and we’ve made a commitment to throw the ball.”
Special teams and defense also saw the spotlight for Hickman. Junior Chase McMichael returned a punt for a 68-yard touchdown and senior cornerback Russell Davis had a 56-yard interception return for a touchdown as well.
Aside from the game, many players on the Kewpies’ sideline could been seen showing off Mohawk haircuts, which came in all shapes, sizes and designs.
“A couple of guys started it and everyone else was like, ‘We should do that as a team,’” Luetjen said. “It kind of adds to the unity.”
The Kewpies will conclude their regular season when they host the Jefferson City Jays for the Class 6 District 6 title on November 2.
