COLUMBIA — A man was beaten and robbed Saturday night as he was walking to work near Ash and Fifth streets, Columbia police said.

The victim, a 41-year-old Columbia man, was approached from behind by three males between the ages of 15 and 20 and was knocked to the ground, where he was repeatedly hit and kicked, according to a police news release.

The attackers attempted to remove the victim’s backpack but only managed to steal his cell phone before they fled on foot, police said.

The victim suffered a minor cut above his left eye and bruising and abrasions on his face and head. Ambulance personnel evaluated him at the scene, but he refused further medical treatment, police said.

Police said they have very little information on the suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 875-8477.
