UM System president search committee to interview candidates Friday

November 8, 2007 | 6:47 p.m. CST

COLUMBIA — The UM Presidential Search Committee will meet Friday to hold interviews with potential candidates for the position of UM System president.

The committee will meet at 1:45 p.m. in a secure third-floor conference room at Boone County National Bank. Because the meeting will deal with the search for a new UM System president, considered a confidential personnel issue, the meeting is closed to the public.

If the Presidential Search Committee decides to make recommendations after the candidate interviews, it will send a list of candidates to the 19-member Presidential Search Advisory Committee.

The Advisory Committee, which is made up of faculty and alumni who represent a cross-section of the UM System, will then conduct its own interviews with potential candidates. A meeting of the Advisory Committee has not been scheduled, said UM System spokesman Scott Charton.

The Presidential Search Committee has been working with Atlanta-based consultant Jerry Baker to find qualified candidates for the position. Previously, the committee offered the top UM System job to New Jersey-based business executive Terry Sutter, who declined the job for a position at a Florida steel manufacturer. U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof, a Columbia Republican, has also publicly announced that he was considered for the position.

The search for a new UM System president has been ongoing since April, when former president Elson Floyd resigned from his position to take a similar post at Washington State University. Gordon Lamb, former president of Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago and former acting chancellor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, is serving as interim UM System president until the position is filled.

In addition to candidate interviews, the UM System Board of Curators will hear a presentation from Nikki Krawitz, UM System vice president for finance and administration, about a possible UM System partnership with a private equity firm.
