PrintTwo Kansas City men led law enforcement agencies on a chase down Interstate 70 and U.S. 65 early Saturday morning after they supposedly stole a vehicle at gunpoint and then fled from police.
Robert Antonio Woods, 21, and Daron Martez Banks, 19, both of Kansas City, have been arrested by the Boone County Sheriff’s Department on suspicion of first-degree robbery, armed criminal action, first-degree tampering and resisting arrest.
According to a sheriff’s department release, at about 1:22 a.m. Saturday, deputies were dispatched to the Midway Exposition Center, 6401 U.S. 40 W,, for a report of an armed robbery and auto theft. An investigation revealed that a man and woman had been sitting in their 1979 Chevrolet Caprice preparing to leave a party when two men, one with a gun, approached them and demanded all their money, the release said. The suspects then fled in the vehicle.
Deputies were already in the area handling an unrelated incident when they saw the vehicle leave. When deputies tried to stop the car on Interstate 70 near the Midway exit, the suspects initially stopped, but then took off, the release said.
The Columbia Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Boonville Police Department and Saline County Sheriff’s Department then joined the Boone County Sheriff’s Department in a pursuit of the vehicle on Interstate 70 and U.S. 65. The chase ended approximately four miles south of Marshall on U.S. 63 when the Missouri State Highway Patrol deployed stop sticks and deflated all four tires of the vehicle, said Sgt. Scott Ewing of the Boone County Sheriff’s Department.
Both suspects were taken into custody without incident, and a firearm that matched the victim’s description was found in the vehicle, the release said. Woods and Banks are currently being held in Boone County Jail, Ewing said. Bond has been set for $100,000 each.
