PrintCOLUMBIA — As the holiday season approaches, it’s almost time for Columbia to host the Eastern Missouri Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run.
The 5K race is held each year to help raise awareness and encourage research on arthritis, which affects one in three Missourians, according to a news release from the foundation.
This year’s race will start at 8 a.m. Dec. 1 outside the Roger B. Wilson Boone County Government Center.
Columbia’s Field Elementary School is doing their part to help out. Thirty third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students from the school’s Fitness Club are hoping to enter the race.
In an effort to make sure all the children who want to participate can, the school is trying to come up with the $450 needed to cover the $15 participant entry fee.
“We have some fundraisers coming up,” said Shannon Bruns, a teacher at the school. “We’ll be doing things like raffles and possibly a bake sale at the school.”
Bruns said it’s important that they raise the money because the race will benefit both the children and the Arthritis Foundation.
“It’s allowing students to be active and participate and give back to the community at the same time,” Bruns said.
Anyone wishing to make a donation toward the students’ entry fees should send a check made out to the Arthritis Foundation to Field Elementary, 1010 Range Line St., Columbia, MO 65202.
