COLUMBIA — Encore, the evening wine-and-dessert bar component to East Elm Street’s Upper Crust, is scheduled to be featured on CBS’ Sunday Morning News.
The newscast will air at 8 a.m. Sunday on Columbia’s CBS affiliate, KRCG/Channel 13. Filming was scheduled to take place Thursday night and patrons were to be notified at the door in case they became part of the show, said owner and MU senior, Adam Guy.
The CBS segment will feature three restaurants across the country, including Finale in Boston and Chickilicious in New York City, to showcase the budding dessert trend in America. Guy anticipates being recognized with some of the frontrunners in the dessert industry.
“I think it definitely says a lot for a restaurant from the Midwest and in Columbia to be featured nationally as a leader in desserts,” Guy said.
Encore opened in August and the downtown Upper Crust is the only one of three Upper Crust locations in Columbia to house an evening dessert and wine bar. Encore is also the only restaurant of its kind in Columbia. It was cultivated from a desire to create a restaurant unique not only to the Midwest but to the entire country, Guy said.
“We were searching for something to do at night in the upper crust,” Guy said. “We knew there was a void in the dessert restaurant industry.”
The gourmet desserts and $12 bottle wines are available 7 p.m. to midnight Thursday through Saturday. Patrons can stop in to sip some java, have a glass of wine or try any one of eight desserts, including Encore’s signature dessert and Guy’s personal favorite, Chocolate Decadence.
“It’s a flourless chocolate cake,” he said. “So it’s kind of like a rich piece of fudge.”
