Military helicopter makes emergency landing at Columbia Airport

COLUMBIA — A military CH-47 Chinook helicopter made an emergency landing Thursday at Columbia Regional Airport after having “hydraulic issues.”

Columbia Airport officials said the unplanned landing was “more of a precautionary measure” than a true emergency.

An emergency call went out at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, saying the helicopter had hydraulic problems, a fuel leak and needed to land. The helicopter then landed and taxied into the airport under its own power, said airport safety officer Robert Bias. It left the airport at about 6:25 p.m.

Airport officials did not know where the helicopter came from or its original destination. The landing did not force any changes to the airport’s normal schedule.
