COLUMBIA — A Columbia man died Friday after he was hit by a sport utility vehicle while riding his bicycle on U.S. 63 near the Broadway exit, Columbia police said.

Robert Duke, 25, was crossing the highway when he was hit by an SUV driven by 36-year-old Holly Andrews of Columbia, according to a police department news release. Duke was taken by ambulance to University Hospital, where he died. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the release.

Andrews and the three children in her car, two 3-year-olds and a 2-year-old, were not injured, according to the release. All were wearing seat belts.

Curtis Perkins, a traffic crash investigator with the Columbia Police Department, said police did not know why Duke was on the highway. Police will continue to investigate the accident, he said.
