COLUMBIA - After the MU men’s basketball team’s victory against Fordham on Tuesday night, forward DeMarre Carroll said that coach Mike Anderson told the team that he would have to teach them how to step on the opposing team’s throat when it had a large lead.
Perhaps the Tigers learned how to do that in just two days.
For the second consecutive game MU took a 30-point lead into halftime while on its way to a lopsided victory.
The Tigers defeated the Southern University Jaguars 95-50 on Friday night to improve to 3-0 on the season, Southern dropped to 1-2.
But unlike when MU defeated Fordham on Tuesday night, the Tigers did not have a sloppy second half. The team continued to attack on the offensive and defensive ends, and extended its lead by outscoring Southern 44-29.
Anderson said he found it a bit ironic that the Tigers were put into a situation where they had a 30-point halftime lead for the second game in a row.
“You want to find out how our guys would respond to that,” Anderson said of the big lead. “I thought they responded. For the most part the energy was still there (in the second half).”
Carroll led the Tigers with 18 points and nine rebounds, and guard Keon Lawrence chipped in 14 points to go along with five steals.
“In the first minute (of the second half) it was a little sluggish, but then coach said ‘you all better get on it or we’re going to have practice,’” Carroll said. “Everybody doesn’t want to practice, so we got on it.”
The margin of victory was MU’s largest since a 117-62 victory against Southern on Dec. 6, 2001.
MU’s next game is at 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City against No. 12 Michigan State as part of the O’Reilly Auto Parts College Basketball Experience Classic.
