COLUMBIA— A man was in serious condition at University Hospital Wednesday afternoon after he was hit by a car Tuesday night while trying to cross Interstate 70 beneath a pedestrian bridge on Providence Road.
At about 10:01 p.m, Ronald Gillham, 64, of Columbia, was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of the interstate when a white Oldsmobile, driven by David A. Jackson, 26, of Columbia, hit him, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department.
Jackson was headed westbound on I-70 in his vehicle when he saw Gillham in the middle of the interstate. Jackson swerved to avoid hitting him, but failed, police said. Gillham was injured and taken to University Hospital by ambulance. The driver was not injured.
Jackson was arrested on suspicion of driving while his license was suspended, the release said. He also received summonses for operating an unlicensed motor vehicle, driving while suspended and failing to provide proof of financial responsibility.
