Cougars 1-1 at NAIA national volleyball tournament

COLUMBIA — The Columbia College volleyball team swept the University of Mobile (Ala.) 30-27, 30-26, 30-26 in its second match of pool play in the NAIA Volleyball National Championships on Thursday at the Arena of Southwell Complex.

With the win, the Cougars, the No. 7 seed in the 20-team tournament, prevented possible elimination.

Teams are divided into five pools and the top two teams of each pool advance to the quarterfinals. The Cougars (1-1) are now third in pool D. Biola University (CA.), 2-0, is first; Campbellsville University (Ky.), 1-1, is second; Mobile, 0-2, is fourth. The tiebreaker between the Cougars and Campbellsville is broken by Campbellsville’s victory over the Cougars on Wednesday.

“(Our chances to get out of pool play are) pretty good,” Columbia coach Melinda Wrye-Washington said. “I think we can win the whole thing. I think we can beat anybody here.”

The Cougars continue pool play against Biola at 8 p.m. Wednesday night on court No. 2 . Campbellsville and Mobile will play at 8 p.m. Wednesday on court No. 1.
