One Read program seeking input on next book

COLUMBIA — The One Read community reading program is seeking suggestions for its next book.

Readers are invited to submit recommendations until Dec. 7 for the 2008 One Read book selection. Coordinated by the Daniel Boone Regional Library, the One Read program aims to encourage leisure reading and community collaboration through book discussions and other related events, according to the program’s Web site.

After suggestions have been received, a reading panel made up of librarians, professors, business people and other community members will narrow the list to about 10, said Doyne McKenzie, collection development manager for the Daniel Boone Regional Library.

“What we’re looking for is a book that’s accessible ­... because we want to appeal to as many types of readers as possible,” McKenzie said. “We also want a book that provokes discussion because that’s the main goal, to provoke discussion.”

In April, residents of Boone and Callaway counties will be able to vote on the panel’s two or three favorites to determine the centerpiece of the 2008 One Read program.

Recommendations may be submitted electronically at oneread.dbrl.org or on a paper ballot available at the bookmobile or the Fulton, Columbia or Ashland branches of the Daniel Boone Regional Library. Local businesses such as Barnes & Noble, MU’s University Bookstore, Nancy’s Trade-A-Book, the Cherry Street Artisan and the Westwood Cafe are also accepting nominations.
