COLUMBIA — The Office of Cultural Affairs is looking for feedback on Howard Meehan’s proposed design for the public art portion of the renovated City Hall, slated for completion in fall 2010.
After being selected as Columbia’s latest Percent for Art artist by the city’s Standing Committee on Public Art o Sept. 17, Meehan has given his design to the city.
His design encompasses all four corners of the intersection of Eighth Street and Broadway and includes a plaza.
The proposal details eco-friendly elements, such as solar-powered lighting and the use of recycled materials from the city’s landfill.

Meehan’s design is the first Percent for Art project to have a proposal posted online. In the past, proposals have been presented in the lobby of the Daniel Boone City Building.
Because that area is under construction, it seemed like a smart idea to post them on the Web, said Marie Nau Hunter of the Office of Cultural Affairs.
“I suspect we’ll get more comments this time since it’s online, and people can see it anytime,” Hunter said. “But if anyone can’t get online to see the project, they’re welcome to call our office or just come by.”
The art proposal will be a topic at a meeting to review plans for the renovation of City Hall, which will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the mezzanine of the Daniel Boone City Building, 701 E. Broadway.
Meehan will be there to answer questions.
The city will be taking comments from the public until Dec. 14.
After reviewing the public’s comments, City Council will give the design final approval.
