COLUMBIA — Columbia Women’s Lacrosse held an informational meeting Monday night to promote its upcoming season, which will begin in late February. About 15 girls from both Columbia high schools play for the club team.
In the past, the Columbia team played under the umbrella of the Missouri State Lacrosse Association. This year, the team is trying to gain recognition from the Missouri State High School Activities Association, which has sanctioned girls lacrosse since last year.
“We are trying to get lacrosse sanctioned for (Columbia high) schools next year, but we have to focus on this year’s team,” Elaine Jarvis, parent coordinator, said.
Under the MSHSAA guidelines, the Columbia club team cannot play against teams attached to other high schools. MSHSAA does not sanction boys’ lacrosse, but both Hickman and Rock Bridge have club teams.
Participants hope to attract enough interest in girls’ lacrosse to encourage both schools to support teams for the 2008-2009 academic year. The team plans to hold another informational meeting in early January, and interested students can e-mail columbiawomenslacrosse@gmail.com.
