Governor declares state of emergency for Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY — In anticipation of more severe weather, Gov. Matt Blunt has declared a state of emergency, activating the State Emergency Operations Center, the State Emergency Management Agency and the Missouri National Guard. Severe weather began Friday afternoon and is expected to continue through mid-week.

"Severe winter storm systems have impacted Missourians across our state and more storms are expected," said Blunt through a news release.

"My first concern is for the safety of all Missourians. I urge motorists to travel with extreme caution as the state works to keep highways clean during this continuing winter weather emergency."

Power outages have occurred in the central, southwestern and northeastern parts of the state, primarily impacting about 21,000 Ameren UE customers.

Resources from state agencies will be used to assist local governments if needed. The Missouri National Guard will be used to protect citizens and property
