Serving up smiles at Lucy’s Diner in downtown Columbia

December 9, 2007 | 5:21 p.m. CST

COLUMBIA — It’s 5 a.m., and the door opens with a musical chime. The scent of fresh home-cooked biscuits fills the air, and the faint sound of country music drifts from the corner radio.

“Hi! Welcome to Lucy’s!” a friendly staff member says. “You can sit anywhere you’d like.”

There are five barstools and six booths to choose from in the main room and seats are available in the back where the café has been added onto over the years.

Lucy’s is unique to Columbia, offering home-cooked food, gossip and service with a friendly smile.

Lucy J. Reddick is the owner of Lucy’s Corner Cafe, formerly Ron’s Country Boy, at Broadway and Fifth Street.

“It’s been about four years since Lucy took over the restaurant,” waitress Liz Shy says. She adds that Reddick already knew the regular customers and the ins and outs of running a cafe, so it only made sense for Reddick to buy the establishment and take over ownership.

AMBER BRINKER/Missourian Lucy Reddick bought Lucy’s Corner Café when the former site for Ron’s Country Boy went up for sale while she was a waitress there.

As a touring musician who has eaten all over the country I can tell you that Lucy's has one of the finest breakfasts in America. Thanks, Lucy.
