GIVE A TREE: The greenest gift of all
Unlike that homemade sweater or pair of recycled-rubber sandals, give a gift that is guaranteed to fit. A tree. Or a whole patch of them. The Arbor Day Foundation offers Give-A-Tree Greeting Cards for less than $6 (www.arborday.org/shopping/giveatree). Funds from these cards go to replanting U.S. National Forests through a partnership with the U.S. Forest Service. Since 1990, about 10 million trees have been planted in national forests with help from the Arbor Day Foundation, according to the organization’s Web site.
But if planting trees at Yellowstone sounds like a bit of a yawn, try the Amazon. Several organizations make it possible to buy “perpetual protection” for rainforest trees. Rainforests Forever (www.rainforestsforever.org) offers single tree ownership in Biaciu, Brazil, for around $50.

Or you can buy a Christmas tree, rootball and all, and plant that in the the spring instead of tossing a cut tree on the curb on New Years Day.
