COLUMBIA — A Blue Springs man was arrested Thursday evening after leading police on a 10-minute car chase through central and north Columbia, Columbia police said.
Joseph Belle, 28, was taken into custody in the 2600 block of Spruce Drive after an officer deployed his Taser on Belle, who was trying to flee on foot after driving into a dead end. Belle was found to be in possession of a loaded 38-caliber revolver, about 4.5 grams of cocaine, 15 Ecstasy tablets and three grams of marijuana at the time of his arrest, according to a police news release.
Police were trying to pull over Belle’s 2003 Saab for a traffic violation when the vehicle failed to stop. Officers initiated a pursuit at Park Avenue and Eighth Street, with speeds peaking at around 90 mph, according to the release.
Although other officers tried to stop the vehicle with “stop sticks,” spikes used to deflate tires, Belle maneuvered around them or changed direction on each attempt. Belle then turned onto Spruce Drive and, upon reaching its dead end, fled on foot and physically resisted arrest, according to the release.
Belle was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana, felon in possession of a firearm, felony resisting arrest and various traffic charges, according to the release.
Belle also had an outstanding felony parole warrant for an original charge of second degree robbery, according to the release. Belle’s adult female passenger was detained and later released.
As of Friday afternoon, Belle was being held at the Fulton Reception and Diagnostic Center.
