PrintCOLUMBIA — Christmas Day, for many, is a day of family gatherings, all-day feasting and abundant gift-opening. For others, it is about helping people who are less fortunate.
In Columbia, organizations such as the St. Francis Homeless Shelter and the Salvation Army Harbor House cater to the needy.
All year, volunteers at St. Francis House and the Salvation Army provide the city’s homeless population with warm meals, clothing, shelter and medical care.
“We have consistently been the only dinner in town that serves meals every day,” said Lana Jacobs from St. Francis House.
Its mission is no different on Christmas Day.
“We have an open lunch and dinner and Christmas presents, which start from 4 p.m. It’s the place to be,” said Jacobs.
This year, the St. Francis House is serving a Christmas banquet of lamb, salmon, turkey, duck and fresh vegetables and fruits.
“We always enjoy it,” said Jacobs. “People who used to live with us come back and visit; it’s a wonderful time.”
