COLUMBIA — Shots were fired and one intruder was injured after two males tried to break into a Columbia apartment a few minutes after midnight Thursday.

At 12:07 a.m., Columbia police responded to a call of shots being fired at an apartment located on Old 63, according to a Columbia Police Department news release. After the officers arrived, they were told that two males had tried to force their way into the apartment.

The two people in the apartment at the time of the incident, an 18-year-old male and 19-year-old female, said they heard a knock on their door. A few seconds after that, they said someone tried to kick the door in, the release said.

While this occurred, one of the residents got a handgun and fired it at the intruders trying to force their way past the door.

The two residents said one of the intruders was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and the other intruder was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, the release said.

A trip to the scene revealed little. Drops of blood splattered the concrete landing in front of the stairs. Damage to the door was the only indication as to the exact apartment.

Efforts to contact the residents or their neighbors were unsuccessful.

Police were not available for comment.

At 12:11 a.m. the officers on the scene were informed of a gunshot victim that had arrived at Boone Hospital Center’s emergency room. After further investigation, the officers determined that the victim might be one of the intruders, the release said. The gunshot victim was transferred to University Hospital and Clinics for further treatment.

After reading this article (and the other article on this website related to the second home invasion in this town in as many days) I am surprised that you actually refer to the intruder that was shot as a "victim". The victims in this crime were the two people who had their door kicked in. Thank God we have the 2nd amendment since your paper is doing a poor job of exercising the 1st amendment.
