Mo. college students get boost in scholarships

JEFFERSON CITY — Thousands of Missouri college students are getting an increase in their state scholarships.

The Access Missouri scholarship covers about 37,000 students whose families show financial need. The new program was begun this fall to replace two previous scholarships.

At the time, the Department of Higher Education decided to reduce the amount each student could receive because of a larger-than-anticipated number of applications.

But based on the number of people approved for scholarships, the department now has determined that each student can get a little more money.

The annual average scholarship is projected to rise from $1,663 to $2,015. The increase will be applied retroactively to the fall semester.
