PrintCOLUMBIA — Police arrested two men Tuesday night after a bait car was stolen in north Columbia.
At 10:06 p.m., Public Service Joint Communications, which directs police to bait vehicles, was alerted that a bait vehicle deployed on Bodie Drive had been tampered with and was moving, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department.
Deputites with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department located the vehicle as it was traveling west on Brown School Road, and the vehicle was remotely shut off in the 600 block of that area, according to the release.
The vehicle had only been deployed on Bodie Drive for a few days, said Capt. Brad Nelson, police investigations commander.
Driver John Carr, 31, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree tampering and driving with a revoked license. The second suspect, Mark Graves, 33, fled the scene on foot but was arrested shortly after on suspicion of second-degree tampering and resisting arrest.
Both suspects live on Bodie Drive, where the vehicle was deployed.
The Police Department’s bait vehicle program began in December as an effort to catch those involved with auto thefts. Vehicles, which are left in high auto-theft areas, are equipped with alarm systems and GPS tracking. Video and audio is recorded.
