Our brave troops have done their part in defending our country from outside force; now it’s our turn. We are losing our freedom from within because of lack of interest in the affairs of our government and world events. This is the start of the downfall of our country. With only half of the qualified voting, we are losing control of our government to the wealthy special interest groups. We no longer have a government of the people, by the people, but one of the rich and for the rich. This is not entirely the fault of our people or our politicians. Instead it is our political system that breeds corruption and unfair representation, with only the wealthy able to be elected; the voters know that when they are elected they will cater to their own kind.
I feel that in order to break their hold we need to make some change.
- Term limits for Congress
- Limit all candidates to a small, equal amount of campaign money
- Abolish the electoral college and use the popular vote instead
- Use of run-off voting
- Require all voting machines to have backup paper record
- Establish presidential Election Day a national holiday in order to give voters more time to vote.
President Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” I feel it would be better to ask what you can do to make our country fairly represent all our people. As election time approaches, ask the candidates what they would do to improve our system to bring control back to our people. As it is, we have the best politicians money can buy.
