Winter weather advisory issued for Boone County

COLUMBIA — Commuters need to be extra alert during the Tuesday morning travel.

A weak storm system is expected to bring freezing drizzle that might mix with light snow or sleet Monday night. Although the precipitation isn’t expected to add up to much — the National Weather Service is calling for less than 1 inch — temperatures will be low enough to create problems on area roads.

The combination of frozen precipitation and cold prompted the Weather Service to issue a winter weather advisory for Boone County late Monday afternoon until 6 a.m. Tuesday. “A glaze of ice is expected to form on untreated roads, causing them to become very slick,” the Weather Service advisory stated.

Monday’s midday temperature was only a degree below the date’s average of 37 degrees, but Monday night’s storm would lower temperatures and bring in a cold front that would last about a week, said Ben Miller of the National Weather Service in St. Louis.

But going into next week, temperatures should pick up and remain in the 30s and 40s, Miller said.

Miller said the long-range forecast predicts temperatures to be above normal for the next two weeks. “It’s a bonus for this time of the year,” he said.
