Rock Bridge boys roll to victory on Coach Scanlon's birthday

COLUMBIA — Jim Scanlon, the Rock Bridge boys basketball coach, received a nice birthday present Tuesday night, even though most of the team didn’t know about the occasion until it arrived at the gymnasium.

Scanlon, who said after the game that he has been turning 39 for years, wasn’t pleased to see a large sign wishing him happy birthday on the wall after he’d managed to keep it a secret all day.

He was pleased, however, to let his starters spend the final ten minutes of the Bruins’ 67-27 victory against Duchesne sitting beside him and cheering on their deserving teammates.

“Our bench was real good tonight, but they’ve been good,” Scanlon said. “Our bench has been good on the floor and off the floor. They don’t sit there and feel sorry for themselves because they’re not in the game, but I was just glad to get them more playing time tonight.”

Sophomores Ricky Kreklow and Trey Millard came off the bench and scored nine and 11 points, respectively and helped hold the Pioneers to eight first half points.

Millard said the Bruins wanted to “get a quick start and play well from the beginning, and just put them away early.”

Although Rock Bridge (14-2) played Duchesne last season, Kreklow said the Bruins didn’t know much about them.

“We came in with basic knowledge of who their players were and what each player was capable of doing,” Kreklow said.

Scalon said that his team tries to play the same no matter the opponent.

“We have to do what we’re supposed to do first. If we take care of that then hopefully we’ll take care of the other team,” he said.
