COLUMBIA — A Columbia man was arrested Wednesday afternoon in connection with a stabbing that police say occurred after a verbal argument between roommates turned physical.

Michael Michalek, 65, was arrested on suspicion of first degree domestic assault and armed criminal action, according to a police news release.

Police say the suspect and the victim, a 48-year-old Columbia man, were arguing at their residence on the 1200 block of North Range Line Street when the suspect produced a knife and threatened to kill the victim.

The suspect stabbed the victim in the chest, according to the release.

The victim was treated at the scene and then taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the release.

Michalek was released from police custody Wednesday afternoon because the victim refused to prosecute, East District Commander Zim Schwartze said.
