Columbia man arrested for tampering, leaving scene of accident

COLUMBIA — A Columbia man was taken into custody by police Saturday morning after he wrecked a stolen vehicle and then ran away.

Micah A. Schafer, 20, was arrested for first-degree tampering and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident.

According to a Columbia Police Department release, Schafer was traveling west on the 2800 block of Middlebush Drive around 6:30 a.m. when he struck a parked vehicle and fled the scene. A passenger, Joseph Baker, 20, was later found in the vehicle unconscious and was taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

During the investigation of the accident, police discovered that the vehicle Schafer was driving was stolen and took him into custody at the hospital. Schafer is being held at the Boone County Jail with his bond set at $4,500.
